Journalism has been a long tradition at Walkersville High School (WHS). Unfortunately, COVID hit hard, and publishing the paper became problematic. Not being able to work closely with students, no funding for a publication program, and most recently the loss of the Journalism class has put a real damper on the student newspaper. This was a problem across FCPS.
Lauren Grazaiano, the Brunswick High School (BHS) journalism advisor, saw the need and rose to the challenge. She worked with her journalism students to find both the funds and the technology which eventually allowed them to win awards for their student newspaper. This year FCPS decided that all high schools in the county should have access to the SNO news platform, and Lion Times was born.
Online newspapers are the wave of the future, and WHS is taking our first steps towards our own award- winning paper. Our initial five Journalism Club members has risen to eight. They’ve done a great job getting a quality paper to WHS students and staff despite no journalism class and limited club time. We hope you stick with us as we learn and grow, and of course, if you want to give us a hand, we’re always looking for more talent. Enjoy this first edition of the Lion Times.
