When it hits October 1st, temperatures start decreasing from 80°F to 60°F sometimes going even lower. Bare trees are seen more frequently and the day quickly gets dark. Even before the first trick-or-treaters hit the streets, Christmas music starts playing in stores. Some people love this time of year, but others bemoan the loss of the sun. What do students at WHS have to say?
There are students who prefer to go out in hot weather. It’s not about how hot it is, but how the sun makes you feel. Averie says, “The Sun gives me energy letting me do more things and be happier.” Averie is not the only who feels this way, as many prefer warmer weather for participating in activities and work.
There are students who disagree. Celia Alspaugh explains, “I prefer cold weather because I can always put on more layers and being too hot makes me sick.” She feels that cold weather is just more tolerable. Many agree, arguing that carrying a jacket, sweater, or other warmer pieces of clothing could take the problems with cooler days away, and is practical since temperatures inside every classroom in WHS is unpredictable.
Of course, it’s not always about the thermostat; sometimes it’s about memory. “I prefer cold weather because that means Christmas is coming. Also, I just love the feeling of coming home to a nice warm home after being in the cold as opposed to coming home in the sweltering heat,” Isabella Barreto clarifies when asked why she prefers cold weather. That cold time of year can bring joy through the memories it evokes.
This is also true of summer though. Students are counting down the days for their vacations to start. They excitedly await the long days at the beach. The celebration of the Fourth of July seems to be unforgettable with the banging fireworks and cook outs. Many memories are made in the summer.
So which is better? For the small group polled by this reporter, the conclusion is that cold weather days are more manageable, especially if you enjoy wearing warmer outfits and go to WHS. Both times of the year can be special. It’s all about making memories and enjoying life no matter the temperature.
