David Heefner, a teacher at Walkersville High School, prompted his students to write poems using vocabulary words from their class. The students were in the PLTW Aerospace Engineering class. The project was an introductory activity to research about space, planets, orbits, gravity (or lack there of), etc. The students were required to use various vocabulary words in their poems and have at least seven lines in length. There was value in having the students complete this research and put their own spin on connecting with the content. Mr. Heefner says, “I was pleasantly surprised with the unique poems that were composed.” Sadly, no students took him up the opportunity to draw a picture to go with their poem for extra credit. Read below to see what these creative individuals came up with when writing about space related topics. These poems are out of this world!
The Mission
The mars mission grows near
Millions gather, mouths agape in fear
The orbit is imperfect, our chance has yet to appear
Our path into the stars has become unclear
Yet, we continue to push on into the atmosphere
With a countdown the rocket pierces the sky like a spear
It’s only a matter of time until it and our astronauts disappear
Racing to be the first on the new frontier.
-Julian Tadese
Cool Space Poem
Sittin’ in my room and I’m wishing
That I was on a mars mission
With Ian Barr and Gabe Car…ter
So i drove up to their houses and that’s who I got
Me and my boys bouta be some astronauts
We hopped in the rocket, popped on the lid
Went off into orbit, and that’s all we did
– Jonny Raub
Space Poem
Mars mission lit, suit tight, visor down,
Took off clean, now I’m spinning, like a clown
Stars in my face, no map, no plan
Just me and this ship, guess I’m the whole clan.
Orbit’s a loop, and I missed my stop,
Mission Control sayin you good? I’m not.
Astronaut driftin with thoughts on mute,
Talkin to space like it’s some kinda flute.
– Lucas Munro
Astronaut in the Stars
Take my rocket outer space while I’m wishin on a star
Goin on that mars mission and I’m shootin constellations
Astronaut in the stars
Sagittarius, Scorpio, Aries, Taurus, Gemini
wish I was an Astronaut shooting through the high skies
Going through the vastness fallin with the orbit
Fallin to the dark side thinkin I might forfeit
– Ashton Mallette
Mars Poem
On the Mars Mission
People learning about Stars Fission
And in addition
Without opposition
Astronauts going up to space for it
No one thought possible before it
Far away turning in the Or-bit
– Carter Koehler
Beyond the Horizon
Cruisin’ through the stars, we not whippin’ cars
I’m in outer space, tryna find my place
They call me the Martian, please proceed with caution
Lil red dot afar, shining like a star
Fueled by fire and ambition
I launched the mars mission
Nostalgic afterthought, has me feelin’ like an astronaut
I’m back in earth’s orbit
I wish I could get more of it
I’m landin’ back home, letting the planets rest alone
— Elias Goff
Ad Astra Per Aspra
Cool barren land
Deliver me a hand
Of directions to head
Hence forth unto mars
The cosmos beholds the true stars
The ones to deliver the answers
The mission through the lanser
Its crew astronauts forever glansers
Ad Astra Per Aspra
– Craig Darnell
Space Poem
Wish upon a star and I’m seeing my fate
I always got my bread up feeling like bill gates
Use that money and i figure out nuclear fission
Send me up to space, on a mars mission
Jonny Raub say that I’m losing the plot
But little does know,
I’m finna be an astronaut.
– Ian Barr
Dreams
As I look up at the sky
All I want to do is fly
The thought of soaring through the stars
Like through a mission, up to mars
I wish to orbit, up above
Where astronaut would be free, like a dove
Although I can’t right now
I wish to fly above, unbound
– Michael Alspaugh
Voyage Beyond
A spark ignites the Mars Mission’s flame,
Bold dreams that stars can’t tame.
In silence deep, past Earth’s bright light,
We chase the dawn through endless night.
As astronaut drifts, thoughts afloat,
In orbit around this metal boat
He whispers hopes to distant skies-
Where futures bloom and legends rise.
– Shane Fawehinmi
Space Poem
Wish upon some stars
Finna get to mars
They say I’m dropping bars, like a Mars mission
Start cooking like the sun, everyone wanna orbit me
Once I got my bread up, all of a sudden
Everyone around me acting like a professional
They say they astronauts
We all know they astroNOTS
– Gabe Carter
