The 2024-2025 Winter Athletic season is upon us and as we get started with it, the players of Walkersville all have a reason for playing the sports that they love. It seems that the top or most popular winter sports at Walkersville are Basketball and Wrestling.
The Boys Wrestling team has started off with an amazing season so far as they are undefeated they won their first match on Thursday December 8, 2024 against Oakdale (43-35). A few of the players from the team have some things that they have to say. Cooper Jolles (Sophomore) says, “that wrestling is rewarding and takes hard work and dedication. It’s also rewarding when your practice pays off.” Meanwhile wrestler Connor Geahart (Senior) says wrestling has become a part of his life and has changed him since he started wrestling. The lion’s wrestling team had a huge win in there annual tournament. The wrestling team is now 14-0 as they progress throughout the season. This has been one of the best wrestling seasons Walkersville has ever started out with. Lions are excited to see how the season progresses.
The ladies wrestling team has started out slow with two losses back to back the first one was against Frederick high school 31-30 and their second loss was to Oakdale 42-30. Not the way the ladies wanted to start off but they plan to turn their season around. Both scores were rather close. Most students are just excited to see ladies wrestling represented as this is the first year that it is running.
The 2024-2025 basketball season has started off well for our lions. The boys basketball team is 2-2 as they move to the next game against Smithsburg High School on December 20th 2024. Walkersville basketball started off with a win against Francis Scott Key high school 52-49. A close game; however, a win is a win. The team then suffered a tough loss to Tuscarora high school 52-49. It was a close match. Two days later they won at home against Boonsboro high school 59-46. This keeps spirits up as the Lions head into their next game.
The ladies basketball on the other hand is 3-1. The team won the first game 56-46 at home against FSK high school. They also won their second game against Tuscarora high school 45-13. This game had some tension between teams by the end of the game. Then they again won against Boonsboro High 49-11. To end their fourth game however, they lost to Middletown 47-41.
Now these aren’t the only winter sports at Walkersville. We also have indoor track, bocce, and swimming and diving teams. As the athletes of Walkersville prepare for the winter season and the upcoming spring seasons there’s a lot of competition and excitement going around.
