The Walkersville High School Boys Lacrosse team is having a notable season with a current record of ten wins and two losses. There are still three games left in the season as well as the post season games. The team is expected to do relatively well in the postseason. This year the boys team gained a new head coach, John Sienkowski, who is also a Physical Education Teacher at WHS. Coach Sienkowski says, “I am very lucky because I work in the school system so I’ve built relationships before being able to coach them.” He also says that the best way to get to know your athletes is listening and understanding them when they have issues.
Player Gabe Carter says, “He’s a good coach, he has a good mix of coaching and allowing us to be athletes and play on the field.” Coach Sienkowski has been coaching lacrosse for years, starting when he graduated from college. He started playing at seven years old and played four years of high school lacrosse at Frederick High School. He proceeded to play lacrosse and football at two different colleges; his coach recruited him to assist at Middletown after college. Athlete Angelo Torres said, “I love the new coaches and couldn’t be happier. They changed the team around.” When asked about how he supports his athletes Coach Sienkowski said, “I just want to see them be successful and have fun in any way possible, whether that be in school, off the field, or college sports… Just making sure I understand what they are trying to tell me or ask me.” With this change they have also made an improvement with their performance with improvement to their record. Overall, many of the changes made to the team this year were beneficial and there have been great results from both coaches and athletes.
One of the varsity star players is Junior Angelo Torres. Angelo has been playing lacrosse at WHS for three years. So far this season, he has made a huge impact on the team by winning faceoffs and game possessions for the team. Torres says, “The team works together really well; we’re basically a family and we have great chemistry.” He has been a crucial asset to the team this year. Another athlete that has been imperative for the team is Senior Tyler Shuler. He is a defensive player for WHS. Shuler said, “I was happy with the Oakdale game. We really showed what we were capable of. If we play like that every game we could be a top team.” One of his strongest contributions to the team is in getting ground balls. Lastly Freshman Gavyn Dodson, who is a varsity goalie, is also a noteworthy team member. He has contributed enormously to the team this year. Dodson says, “We are really good with transition, or getting back on defense and settling the game.” In closing the team has vastly improved both in their coaching, performance, and attitude. They will be a team to keep your eye on in the postseason.
